Families in nature: changing colors. Join the staff at the Chippewa Nature Center for one of the most colorful times of the year. On October 9, between 2 p.m. and 2 p.m., spend the afternoon exploring and experimenting with falling leaves and fruiting mushrooms to experience the colors of nature. This program is designed for all ages (under 18 / adult).

Questions and answers on food security. MSU Extension offers a weekly 30 minute food preservation information program. A short presentation will be shared focusing on a hot topic, leaving plenty of time for & A. The title of the next session is: Fermented Foods. Nature game. It’s time to play outside! Whether we are baking pies in the earthen kitchen, pretending to be animals, lounging in hammocks, or creating nature art, this hour of play is sure to interest everyone. Caregivers should stay with children during this program and are encouraged to actively play alongside children in their care. This program will be hosted by a member of the Chippewa Nature Center staff from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on October 12. The program is designed for children from 2 to 10 years old (under 18 with adult). Preservation of the MI Harvest series. Michigan State University Extension will be offering a series of online food preservation courses. These free online courses will be offered on Thursdays at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The next topic will be Apples – not just applesauce. These sessions will not be recorded, they will only be offered live. Mobile Pantry from the Midland County Emergency Pantry Network. Struggling to make ends meet? Visit the Midland County Emergency Pantry Network Mobile Pantry on Wednesday, October 13, United Steel Workers Hall, 3510 James Savage Road, Midland. Receive free food to supplement your family’s pantry. Pre-registration is required by calling 989-573-4547 on Monday, October 11 between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. You will be assigned a number and a time when you register. Those who are not registered can come at noon and register if there is still food available. Park only on the south side of the road, do not block driveways or roads.

Native plants in the autumn landscape. Enjoy a relaxed evening hike to explore the gardens and trails of the Chippewa Nature Center from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. On October 14, observe the unique structures and seeds native plants provide to the fall landscape. Tips for developing and protecting your credit. MSU Extension is hosting this free webinar from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on October 14. There is a lot of confusion among consumers around “credit,” yet credit affects so many aspects of everyday life. This workshop will address credit myths, explain the importance of credit reports, demystify credit scores, and offer strategies to develop and protect your credit while managing your debt. Investigate Foods With Science. This kid-friendly food science program returns at 4 p.m. on Monday, October 18. MSU Extension will be back with the weekly after-school series designed for young people. Each week the team will explore aspects of cooking is an experience and cooking is a science. Children will be presented with a recipe or experience demonstration suitable for children so that they can try it at home with the help of parents. The following week, the young people can share their experiences or their photos. All sessions will be presented via Zoom. The first topic will be green eggs and ham. Every Penny Counts: Savings Strategies Webinar. MSU Extension is hosting this free webinar from noon to 1 p.m. on October 19. Saving money can seem like an impossible dream. It can be done with a little planning and discipline. This hour-long webinar will explain where to find money to save and ten strategies for saving money. For example, save 50 cents a day for a year and you can build almost 40% of a $ 500 emergency fund! Pre-registration is required. Safe food = healthy children. MSU Extension is offering a three-hour online training for child care providers with the Safe Food = Healthy Kids (SFHK) program from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on October 20. Learn the best food safety practices to keep the children in your care safe. Food safety education topics discussed in class include proper cleaning and sanitizing, cooking, food preservation, as well as personal hygiene and more. SFHK is approved training for Great Start to Quality, so this class will count toward annual training hours. The course is led by food safety educators from MSU Extension. Cooking for the crowds. Is your organization preparing for a gastronomic event? Cooking for Crowds classes educate volunteers and groups that offer fundraisers and events such as dinner parties and bake sales. Join MSU Extension for this Zoom online course to learn how to keep the community safe and prevent foodborne illness. There are a variety of food safety hazards that develop when cooking large amounts of food. Learn how to reduce these risks and help prevent conditions that can lead to foodborne illness. Educational topics include foodborne illness, buying safely, storing, preparing and serving food. The course will include information based on the Michigan Food Code and Michigan State regulations. The cost for this three-hour course is $ 15, with each participant receiving a food safety manual in the mail after registering for the course.
