San Diego’s ARLO Chef Participates in Food Network Beach Cook-Off

SAN DIEGO, CA – ARLO restaurant chef Joshua Mazoukes of San Diego is among the contenders for an upcoming East Coast vs. West Coast series, Food Network, which challenges the best cooks to create such a summer, beach dishes like lobster rolls, fish tacos, funnel cakes and elote street corn.

The six-week “Beachside Brawl” will premiere at 10 p.m. on June 19, hosted by Food Network star and celebrity chef Antonia Lofaso, owner of several Los Angeles-area restaurants.

After beginning his career at Thomas Keller’s famed The French Laundry in Yountville, Mazoukes won acclaim for helping put Mission Valley restaurant on the culinary map with ARLO’s eclectic menu, including lamb meatballs. Moroccan-inspired, maple halibut, forest mushrooms / goat cheese flatbread and brunch dish, Cuban pork Benedict.

Mazoukes, who took time off from ARLO’s kitchen during the filming of “Beachside Brawl,” was one of four chefs selected to serve on Los Angeles restaurateur Brooke Williamson’s West Coast team.

The quartet assembled by “Top Chef” winner Williamson also includes Jessica Roy of Newport Beach and two chefs from Washington State. The West Coast gang will face an East Coast team with cooks from New Jersey, Florida and Massachusetts and led by Boston chef Tiffani Faison.

And the stakes are high in this beachside showdown. One contestant will be crowned “Best of the Beach” and win a beach getaway worth up to $25,000, the network said.

For the first challenge, both teams must create promenade-style dishes — which best represent their ribs — including something on a stick, something in a bun, and something fried. Other challenges will include boardwalk bake sales, “low-budget seafood banquets” and “million-dollar yacht meals”, television officials said.

Lofaso, a New York native, now a resident of Venice and owner of Greater LA’s Scopa, Black Market, The Local Peasant and DAMA, predicts viewers will enjoy rooting for their coast and favorite beaches.

“With my strong ties to both coasts – being born in the east and raised in the west – I am delighted to oversee this competition,” she said.

Joining Lofaso will rotate guest judges to decide which chef goes home each week and to help determine the winner.

Is it “west coast/best coast” for summer bites? Will Mazoukes emerge as “Best of the Beach”? Plug into knowledge.
